Offaly County Council has given the green light for a large solar farm development to be located eight kilometres to the north east of Tullamore, in the townlands of Derries and Lackan.
The development is expected to see 124,200 solar panels installed across a 53.7 hectare site, and is due to generate enough electricity to power at least 5,000 Irish homes.
Planning permission has also been granted by Offaly County Council for a solar farm on a 60-hectare site outside Tullamore. The development is to be located in the townlands of Ballyteige Little, Ballyteige Big and Colehill, close to Ballycommon, approximately 4.8 km west of Tullamore and 3.9 km northwest of Ballinagar.
To be known as Ballyteige Solar Farm, the project is earmarked to stretch across sixteen fields of primarily pastureland.
It will consist of the construction of PV panels mounted on metal frames, new access tracks, underground cabling, perimeter fencing with 81 CCTV cameras and access gates.
