Ballinknockane Solar Farm:This solar farm, located in Limerick, is part of a renewable energy initiative. It boasts an approximate capacity of 61 megawatts peak (MW p). Once operational, it will contribute significantly to clean energy production in the region.

The Woodstown Solar Farm, situated in County Limerick, received planning permission from the Limerick City and County Council. The project involves the development of a solar photovoltaic (PV) farm spanning nearly nine acres (approximately 35,582 square meters) of ground-mounted solar panels on steel frames. These panels will harness sunlight to generate sustainable electricity at the site. Limerick has been at the forefront of solar energy expansion. Other solar farms are also in the pipeline, aiming to enhance Ireland’s renewable energy portfolio. These projects are expected to contribute significantly to the country’s clean energy goals.

The Schools Photovoltaic Programme is a commendable effort by the Irish government to promote renewable energy in schools. Under this scheme, eligible schools receive funding for the installation of roof-mounted solar PV systems.

• Each eligible school can benefit from up to 6 kWp (kilowatts peak) of solar capacity. This typically equates to approximately 16 solar panels.
• The program includes not only the installation but also the connection to the grid and a monitoring system with a display screen.
• The first phase of this program, which covers over 1,600 schools, opened for applications in November 2023. Schools in counties such as Clare, Donegal, Dublin City, Galway, Kerry, Kilkenny, Leitrim, Limerick, Offaly, Waterford, and Wicklow are part of this initial phase.
• The intention is to extend the program to more counties in subsequent phases, ensuring that all eligible schools across the country have the opportunity to participate by the end of 2024
