How much do solar panels cost?

Return on your Solar Panel Investment

No matter how big or small your pv system will be it is still a significant financial investment. Your solar panels are an investment and they will produce a return so how does that stack up against leaving your money in the bank. How long will it take for you to see a return on that investment?

The graphic you see shows the figure for an investment of €10,000 in a 4kWh system installed in Dublin. We make some assumptions in relation to the cost of power, the amount of solar power been generated by the panels and then used in the home. We also factor in power generated by the panels and exported to the grid. There is no battery as part of this system.

The first thing to note is while the 4kWh system these figures are based on cost €10,000 , your net cost will be €7,600 once you the SEAI grant is taken into account.

  • The first column shows you what would have happened if you left your €7,600 in the bank earning interest. You can see at the end of 10 years you would have made less than €1,000 and after 20 years that would have grown to a return of €1,600. After 30 years you are still not showing a profit of more then €3,000. Nothing to get too exciting about.
  • The second column shows what inflation will do to your €7,600 if you do nothing with it. You can see that after 10 years you have lost nearly €2,000 and after 30 years you are down over €4,000.
  • The final two columns show you how your return on investment grows if you invest in solar panels. Each column shows a different rate of return depending on inflation in the price of electricity. One is a rate of inflation of 3% and the second an annual rate of inflation of 5%.
  • The third column shows you solar panel investment will break even in year 7 and by year 10 you are making a €4,288 profit. After 20 years that profit grows to €20,265 and after 30 years your profit is €41,736
  • The final columns shows the return you get if electricity inflation is 5% annually. So in this situation you would be in profit of €5,443 after 10 years, after 20 years your return on investment is €26,689 and after 30 years your profit is €61,297

You may see from this that an investment in installing solar panels makes great financial sense. You could argue that solar panel installation on your home should be part of any diverse investment portfolio.

We can thoroughly recommend Richard and his team. We appreciated a single point of contact for price marketing and technical issues. We always felt that we were listened to, that the advice we received was honest and open, and that the team had the client's best interests at heart. The survey was thorough and plenty of options were offered. There was never any doubt about technical proficiency and their knowledge of cutting-edge issues. The installation went really well and the team were thorough, helpful, neat and tidy. Follow-up has also been excellent. Great guys.

Solarshare provided excellent support to me when I was investigating which type of solar PV systems to instal in our home. Richard is a fountain of knowledge and was very forthcoming in explaining various considerations in the design of our system. What I find really interesting is to see the full 6.5KW system output under clear skies here in Ireland. We see about 1/2 of this with a full covering of light clouds. Only on very cloudy, rainy days, as we experienced here a couple of weeks ago, did we have low output from the panels. The monitoring app is a fantastic way to visualise how the system is performing. I would highly recommend Richard and his team to anyone considering solar PV installations.

Richard and his team installed a 3.1kw system for me in early May. I found them trustworthy and extremely helpful all the way through the process. Their customer focus and workmanship on the install was excellent. The system is working great (652kwh generated from May 7th to date). Richard didn't try to oversell the capabilities of the system and was happy to go through the expected outputs and return on investment scenarios in detail. My (€1800) grant was approved this week without any issues. I would highly recommend Solarshare if you are thinking of installing PV.

Solar PhotoVoltaics (PV) is the technology which converts light into electricity. Using semiconducting materials, a photovoltaic system employs solar modules, each comprising a number of solar cells, which generate electrical power.

Solar Power has specific advantages as an energy source:

  • low cost
  • zero-carbon
  • low maintenance (no moving parts)
  • modular

SolarShare’s comprehensive SolarSurvey is designed to take you through the process of sizing the optimum solar PV system to maximize solar electricity generation for the size of your roof, its orientation to the sun, and your average annual electricity consumption.

A SolarShare system, depending on your configuration, will typically consist of the following components:

  • Solar PV panels, 6-18 (up to a max of 7kWp)
  • An inverter, to convert DC electricity to AC (up to 6kVA)
  • A battery, typically starting at 5kWh and expanding up to 15kWh and beyond

Solar PV panels typically have a design life of over 25 years. Product warranties are typically 12 years, with a linear performance warranty of 30 years, depending on the manufacturer.

Inverters have a design life of 10 to 20 years depending on the manufacturer. Product warranties are 10 years and up.

Batteries have a design life based on charge/discharge cycles which range from 5000 to 10000, with a time-based limit of 10 years usually applying. Depending on the manufacturer, the battery will be warrantied to have from 60% to 80% of its capacity after 10 years, but can be expected to continue operating after that.

When solar power is created, it must be used immediately, otherwise your unused electricity will spill over to the grid. To avoid spilling your excess electricity to the grid, a battery is needed. A battery stores excess solar electricity generated for use later in the day.

You will of course now get paid for any electricity you export to the grid so even if you do not have a battery you will still benefit from the electricity you generate but do not use immediately.

Once you fill in the form we can get it started.

The key information on the form is your Eircode. We use that to find your house on Google Maps.

This gives us a view of your roof. This allows us to:

  • See the size of your roof so we calculate how many panels can be installed.
  • We can see if any part of your roof is in shade. The less shade the better.
  • We can see how your roof is orientated to the sun.

We take this information and input it into some sophisticated software we have. This will tell us how much electricity it is possible to generate on your roof.

Using this & the information you supply regarding your current electricity spend we can calculate how much you will save on your electricity bills.

We do not investigate only 1 scenario.  We will bring you information based on different panel configurations and how the numbers work with or without a battery.

This part of the survey is followed by a consultation with you. Together, based on your budget and ambitions for any solar system you have installed we come up with the configuration that works best for you.

This approach takes a bit of time, often can stretch past 1 phone call. The effort involved reflects the fact that this is a significant purchase on your behalf.

Our objectives in this are simple.

We aim to ensure you have & understand all the information you need to ensure you make the best decision for your home.

Considering these panels could be on your roof for 25 years I am sure you will agree this is time & effort very well spent.

The survey is completely free and without any obligation on your part to buy solar panels from us.

Yes, you will.

As of February of 2022 the legislation has been passed in The Dáil that allows for the payment of what is called the Feed In Tariff for excess power generated by your panels.

By the end of August 2022 most companies will declare how much they are going to offer to their customers who via their solar panels send electricity back into the grid.  So far the following prices have been announced , Pinergy will pay 13.5c per kWh, SSE Airtricity & Electric Ireland will pay 14c per kWh, Energia will pay 18c per kWh and Bord Gais will pay 18.5c per kWh. Flogas come out on top paying 20c per kWh.
